MINISTRY OF INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN
CRAS ERUDITIO HODIE
Who is it for
The ReD course is for anyone who wants to learn how to create engaging and effective elearning content or informal media (blogs, podcasts, video, presentations, screencasts and more). It will also help you support others within your organisation who are creating informal media. It assumes no previous knowledge and covers effective instructional design with text, images, audio, video and interactivity. It also includes links to tutorials for Articulate (a popular ‘rapid’ elearning author tool) and Adobe Captivate (an IT system training author tool).
Structure
The Rapid eLearning Development (ReD) course comprises around 40 hours of effort over a four week period. New students (known as Junior Operatives) are enrolled every month so you will work through the course with peers who may be based anywhere in the world.
The course is built with many of the tools you will learn to use, so the medium is also the message. It includes 3D gaming environments, a social network, collaborative mindmaps, webinars, graded assignments and assessments.
The Games
A course with attitude, the ReD course immerses you in the 3D environments of the Ministry of ID. Created from gaming environments the Ministry is an entirely digital organisation built on the whims of its Senior Operatives - your tutors. In their digital realm anything is possible.
The Network
This social network is the place to interact with your peers and tutors, socialise and submit your assignments for peer review. If you have used Facebook, Bebo or MySpace you’ll find the MID Social Network easy to use.
The Mindmaps
The Mindmaps define the learning outcomes for each of the modules and links to resources to help you achieve them. Resources can be both added and rated by users,
The Knowledge Checks
Online assessments that allow you to ensure you have attained the right level of knowledge before attempting the Skills Assignment.
The Skills Assignments
There are seven assignments in all the main tasks involved in elearning design and development including copywriting, recording audio, shooting and editing video and developing elearning and informal media. We recommend you choose a real project to work on, however note that these will be seen by your fellow Junior Operatives and tutor so do not include any sensitive or confidential information. Alternatively we can provide you with a topic to build content on.
The Webinars
A regular chance to ask questions and talk to some leading designers within the elearning industry.
Collaborative Learning
A large part of your learning will be through reviewing and commenting on the work of others, contributing to the weekly discussion topics, and reflecting on your own learning via your personal learning blog.

“...I have enjoyed the first week and loved the 'pick n mix' style format; using games, blogs, practical assignments and informal learning. Felt like a child in a sweetshop :)” - Alison Wright, eLearning Programme Manager, NHS Education South Central
